Happy Monday!

What an incredible first week it was at Fultonvale School last week! I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our families for the warm welcome and for sharing your amazing kids with me. It’s been such a joy getting to know them and experiencing the enthusiasm and energy they bring to our school each day.

A big shoutout to everyone who participated in Dress Like a Teacher Day! Your creativity and sense of fun truly captured the spirit of our school community.

Congratulations to our senior basketball teams on their first tournaments of the year! Your hard work and determination were evident, and we are all so proud of your efforts.

I also want to thank Toni Harrison for the insightful and inspiring presentations this past week. The valuable messages shared will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on our students and staff. More information about Toni's presentations can be found in a blog post article below.

I’m looking forward to building strong connections with each of you as we continue this school year together. Thank you for your trust and partnership in supporting our learners!

It's a great week for a great week!

ACTION

Skating Reminders

Skating lessons for our elementary students start this week. As a reminder students must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet or an ice skating helmet with the ASTM F 1849 certification or a ski/snowboard helmet meeting ASTM F 2040, CEN 1077, Snell RS-98, or CSA Z263.1 certification; as well as properly-fitted skates and gloves or mittens.

Also, if parents are skating/volunteering for the afternoon and you would like to to take your child home from the rink, you MUST come to the office and sign them out. When students are not checked out at the office we hold up the busses because we are looking for them to ensure they are accounted for. Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.

2025-26 Fee Consultation Process

Under Alberta Education’s School Fee Regulation, schools must consult with parents prior to setting school fees for the upcoming school year.

Our next school council meeting will be taking place on January 21, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. During that time, we’ll be sharing information about our current fee structure, posing specific questions about priorities, and asking you to provide your feedback as we plan for the next school year. While many of these activities and services enhance students’ educational experience, we want to ensure these fees aren’t cost prohibitive for families.

Specifically, we will be asking for input on the following:

  • Noon hour supervision
  • Field trips and associated fees
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Non-curricular goods and services (for example, student union and yearbooks)

We understand not all families will be available to attend the meeting but it’s still important we get as much input from the school community as possible. Following the meeting, materials will be shared on our website for your review, and an email address provided so you can submit a written response.

School administration will use feedback provided to help determine fees for next year, which will then be shared at the March school council meeting, posted to our website and shared via link through email.

I look forward to hearing from you on January 21.

Literacy Corner

As students spend more time engaging with online resources for research and reading, developing strong digital literacy skills is essential. This includes understanding how to navigate, assess, and use
technology responsibly and ethically.

Mike Ribble’s Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship—covering topics like digital etiquette, online safety, and digital rights—provide a framework for fostering positive and secure online habits.
For practical tips and conversation starters, explore resources like the
Digital Citizenship Guide for Parents, which help families discuss how to be respectful and responsible digital citizens.

Racism Isn't Funny

Last week we welcomed Toni Harrison to speak with our students. Toni is an experienced speaker who helps people understand what racism is and how it affects individuals and communities. He has worked with many schools and organizations, teaching the importance of kindness, respect, and inclusion.

Toni read the book, Our Skin, by Jessica Ralli and Megan Madison, with our Grades 1-3 students. His message focused on how to be kind and welcoming to all. With Grades 4-9 students, Toni talked about how racism sometimes shows up in jokes and why it's important to know that these jokes can hurt others. During his Racism Isn’t Funny presentation he defined the terms racism, microaggression and antiracist for students. Below is a video about microaggressions that was shared during the assembly. We know our amazing students at Fultonvale will continue to be aware of their words and actions so we can continue to create a kind and inclusive community.
